One of our favorite pieces of modern furniture; the Butterfly Stool unmistakably modern while displaying an unmistakable Japanese sensibility. The Butterfly Stool was designed by influential Japanese designer Sori Yanagi. The Butterfly Stool by Sori Yanagi is an elegant piece of Japanese modernist furniture design that will compliment any refined interior. Although the Yanagi Butterfly Stool was first created in 1954, it demonstrates timeless style and grace, a hallmark of the constrained Japanese design style we have come to love. The imaginative sinuous lines of Yanagi's Butterfly Stool evoke the delicate design of a butterfly's wings, yet at a certain angle, it is as if a whale is diving back into the ocean. We at Stardust love the Butterfly Stool. This could be our "island" design; you know...you are stranded on an island and you could only take 1 piece of modern furniture...
To design the Butterfly Stool, Sori Yanagi combined his Eastern influences with a special technique created by Ray and Charles Eames of bending and shaping plywood. Yanagi simply inverted two L-shaped pieces of rosewood plywood and braced them together using brass hardware. The concept is effortless, yet its presentation is rather bold. Each Butterfly Stool has its own unique intricate wood pattern as it was intended by nature.
