Eero Saarinen developed his Tulip Chair from 1955 to 1957 and it is and was the first one-legged chair in furniture history. Produced by the American manufacturer Knoll International, the Saarinen Tulip Chair is part of an entire furniture collection featuring a columnar base, the so-called Pedestal Collection, a collection which also includes the Saarinen tables and the Saarinen Tulip Armchair. As with the Tulip Chair the Tulip Armhair features a pedestal made of heavy die-cast aluminium on which rests an organically curved seat shell.
